Dr. Debdutta Bandyopadhyay is a cell biologist. He pursued his doctorate studies from Indian Institute of Chemical Biology (IICB) and received his PhD degree in 1994 from Jadavpur University. From 1995 to 2001 he continued his post-doctoral studies in Tulane University, New Orleans, MD Anderson Cancer Centre and Baylor College of Medicine, Houston, USA. In 2002, he assumed a faculty position in Baylor College of Medicine and continued till 2006. He turned to India in the same year and joined Zydus Research Centre as Deputy General Manager. During his tenure in Zydus, he served as General Manger and Senior General manger and assumed the role of the Head of the Cell Biology and Invitro biology. In 2023, he joined ATGC Diagnostics as Senior Advisor (Training).
During his tenure in USA, his research endeavor was primarily focused on receptor kinase signaling and its role in diabetes and cancer. Later, he moved on to the role of epigenetic modification in cancer and senescence. After joining Zydus, he still continued his work on cancer and diabetes with additional interest on Inflammatory, auto-immune disorder, and metabolic diseases. His work from Zydus resulted in discovery of Desidustat (brand name Oxemia), a drug for anemia, that is completely developed in India.
His research work awarded him with more than 50 publications in peer reviewed journals including, Current Protocols in Cell Biology, Aging Cell, Oncogene, JBC, etc. He has also authored several book chapters on senescence, cancer and in-vitro experiments in drug development.
Dr. Bandyopadhyay also has also published several videos and written chapters regarding the covid pandemic in the video section and online edition of ABP group of publication. These videos and write-ups are aimed to explain covid in layman’s term for the benefit of common people.
